Album Review
This is the English language album by French pop star Vanessa Paradis, released in 1992, and produced by Lenny Kravitz, when they were dating.
Like Kravitz's earlier work, this album contains 60's and 70's style pop/rock psychedelia that is enhanced by Vanessa's chirpy vocals. Many of the songs are stripped-down, back-to-basics retro cool, and makes the listener feel that he has been transported back to New York City in the 1960s.
Best songs include her remake of Lou Reed's "I'm waiting for the man", the ballads "Your love has got a handle on my mind" and "Sunday mondays", and the sweet punk/pop of "Be my baby". A classy, well-crafted album that is fun, but not overly commercial. Perfect for those lazy Sunday afternoons when you are sitting on your patio smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. Sadly, Vanessa has not recorded any English albums since then, because she does have a sweet distinctive voice which would have sounded good in any language.
For the record, she is now married to Johnny Depp and has 2 babies, but in her day, she was what Avril Lavigne would like to be. Cool, sophisticated, and utterly charming.
